Human Computer Interaction (M.S.)

A résumé or curriculum vitae is required.

A statement of purpose is required:

• Please describe how pursuing an MS in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) will assist you in your career or any longer-term goals. Also indicate why, specifically, you are interested in pursuing this degree at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Include any information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and qualifications for this program. Recommended length is a concise 2-4 pages single spaced.

A personal history statement is also required:

• Required of all applicants. This statement will be used in conjunction with your application for graduate admission and financial support. Note that the personal history statement should not duplicate the statement of purpose. Recommended length is a concise 1-3 pages single spaced.
• UC Santa Cruz is interested in a diverse and inclusive graduate student population. In an essay, discuss how your personal background informs your decision to pursue a graduate degree. Include any educational, familial, cultural, economic, or social experiences, challenges, or opportunities relevant to your academic journey; how you might contribute to social or cultural diversity within your chosen field; and/or how you might serve educationally underrepresented segments of society with your degree.

An online portfolio is also required:

• Submit a link to your most exciting and relevant work. This can include student projects, industry projects, or personal work. It does not have to be directly related to HCI/UX.
• Please ensure that any online links in your portfolio remain valid and accessible. Do not password protect your portfolio. The admissions committee will not download any specialized software nor contact you in order to view or access your portfolio. You may link to a file (e.g., PDF) or website containing your portfolio.
• The portfolio may include one or more of the following:​
  • 2-3 writings maximum (e.g., slide decks, academic papers, class papers/reports)
  • 2-3 links to interactive pieces maximum (e.g., prototypes, web sites)
  • 10 minutes of video maximum
  • 10-15 still images maximum
• Each work in your portfolio should include a summary page that succinctly describes the work, skills used, outcomes achieved, and, in the case of any group work: the names and roles of your other team members, your individual role, and your contributions to that work. If you include industry work, please ensure you have the appropriate permissions.
